Forums, like everything else these days, are disturbingly tribal.
The default setting for people who've bought into that nonsense is antagonism toward anything outside their bubble.
It's self-destructive and ridiculous but that won't stop them from doing it.
The same folk who are always saying "forums today suck" never seem to quite take that next step and have the epiphany that forums are only collections of individuals so what they're basically saying is "people in forums today suck". Maybe they're avoiding it on purpose because admitting it would require self-assessment and some kind of personal response but they're actually content with the way things are. Or just lazy.
Perhaps try appealing to their egos instead of their intellect?
With most of the current netizens in these forums that might be the only tact with which they can connect.
