Is .co just as good as .com to use for a website name?
« on: September 04, 2022, 02:36:38 AM »
Maybe Biggie Smiles can answer this question.

I'm trying to help someone set up a website.

Trouble is .com is taken.
But we can still get .Co for the website name.

Question is, can website.co pass as being just as acceptable as website.com?

Can anyone  answer this question?

Does it affect search rankings or disrupt the users expectations?

And is .net or .organization suitable?

Btw this is a for profit business this individual has.

Thanks.

It doesn't really make a difference as long as people know how to find you

it all boils down to your marketing

Here's somebody who more or less says the same thing:

BTW I was just trying to help someone because their URL kinda got hacked where she bought some website package  butt not the URL.

She kinda got shut out of her own website so I thought she should just start over by getting a new url & hosting plan then getting the other one shut down.

Wasn't a very good name anyways.

I had a blog years ago with a tight name but never got around to consistently propagating it with timely entries.

Started out buying .com .com.au .net .org .info to redirect to the .com but as the years went by, prices got jacked up and I was spending 500 bucks a year on auto renewal because I'd forget to kill some of those unnecessary extensions in time, and the vicious yearly cycle would begin again.

So like Biggie says.... pick an extension and ride it.....whatever it is. If your growth is decent, snag up other extensions before copycats try to cash in.

Everyone knows .com and the majority know .net or even .org but the dozens of others?  Only people who really pay attention which is not remotely the majority.

This is like arguing the marketing benefits between IP v4 vs IP v6

it's completely irrelevant.

if people know your name it's cause you've done a good job marketing your website. .co .com .dickwad has ZERO to do with it

Yeah what he said.

If you're ahead of the market nobody gives a shit whether you're .com or .cumshot.

Having something other than a generic name for your business helps. If your business becomes so successful that the other domains become desirable you'll have enough cash to pay for them without thinking.

I don't think Mr Coca Cola loses sleep worrying about some new, groovy domain he hasn't got.
