The US declared war on Japan and her allies ie Germany after sitting on the fence whilst the rest of the free world suffered.

In the spirit of a 'Free Lunch' though the Americans then profitted from the war in a most unseemly fashion through the remainder.

As it went having the Axis powers devoting thier resources into building militaria was preferable to them having to concentrate on cars and consumer electronics thereby decimating the industrial might of the Allies from the late 50's onward.

Funny how things turn out.

The British Prime Minister who declared war was Neville Chamberlain. Churchill was a disgraced Toff with no affinity with the working classes who was still in disgrace from his conduct as First Lord Of The Admiralty regarding the Dardanelles and Gallipoli campaigns of World War 1. He grew up in a palace, was bipolar and flip flopped between the Liberal and Tory parties in search of success. He was however totally focused on the war and often went for many days without sleep. It's conjecture to say whether the war would have run in a similar fashion had this conflicted character not been at the helm.

In true British tradition he was rewarded for his service by being voted out of power very quickly after the war was won by a British public sickened by events. As we are Brits though we often vote him as the most influential Englishman of all time.

So that's all right then.

Since Churchill was a nothing player in the game at the start of hostilities who he was in cahoots with is a moot point.

He has no relevance until 1940 when Chamberlain lost his bottle.

It's interesting to consider that the war was won by one diagnosed mental case versus another.

I believe Churchill was in power when Hitler was attempting to make peace and avoid conflict with Britain, but the people he was involved with and financed by made sure that Churchill shunned Germany and instead pushed for war.

Churchill's only connection to the pre war situation was that he was part of the aristocracy that were pro German and really didn't give a fuck what was going on. They just didn't want another war.

It's simple to Google the start of WWII and see who the major players were.

Chamberlain famously tried to appease Germany and brought back a signed contract from Hitler limiting German advances to those territories the idiots were willing to give up. Mainly the Sudetenland but also other places.

Hitler promptly ignored the treaty and Britain and France said if he invaded Poland then there would be shit.

He did. There was.

Degrees of severity are only directly related to degrees of appropriate punishment, not to applicability in the first place.
